There's something about being near water that calms and soothes me - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.
After driving through Oregon state and stopping by this insanely cool wildlife safari, we attended an evening service at Bethel Church in Redding, California. We then continued our journey south, with a quick tour of San Francisco by night, and ended up at an RV resort near Pismo Beach over Christmas.
A lot of our stops on this road trip were planned on the fly (after some quick calculations by my mathematical genius of a husband and some frantic TripAdvisor research by me). Pismo Beach seemed like a good option, because it seemed like a pretty chill place to spend a few nights in, and it would bring us closer to our final destination (LA!).
Looking back, I realise now that that was one of the best decisions we'd made.
I've hardly spent a Christmas away from all the Christmassy things that take place - like gift exchanges, dinner gatherings, admiring pretty light displays, or watching a church play. So being at Pismo Beach was such a welcome change. I didn't have to think about my outfits, I wasn't fussed about what our meals would be like, and I had absolutely nothing planned. And that was wonderful.
All we did on Christmas Day: A leisurely stroll on the beach, then an hour-long trek to nearby Dinosaur Park to catch a glimpse of the sunset.
It was SO beautiful, guys. The pink-tinged sky, the craggy rocks, the gently lapping water... I remember that there were quite a few people there, but everyone was pretty quiet, as if afraid to break the spell that came over all of our awe-filled eyes.
Even now, as I look through the photos I snapped there, I am filled with a sense of thankfulness and joy. We might've been away from all our family and friends and we weren't doing anything particularly festive, but God gifted us this beautiful sunset to enjoy together.
And that was all we really needed for Christmas - not lavish gifts or a drool-worthy spread, but a magnificent sunset created by a magnificent God.
